Sado Island
Niigata · hokuriku

Full forecast & date overlap

There are a few spots in Japan I will revisit. Sado is one of them. It reminds me of Vancouver Island. Ppl were super friendly, and the food was super delicious. Sake is among the best in Japan. The only thing is that if you rent or drive your own car around the island, you need to be aware of the road width. Some areas are only for one car at a time. However, I do see contractors working to expand the road width. Mahalo! PS: I saw the Toki crane in northern Sado. It was so fast that I didn’t have time to take a photo.
Sado Island is a peaceful and stunning getaway off the coast of Niigata. From golden beaches and crystal-clear water to lush mountains and charming villages, every corner feels special. The history here is rich—you can explore old gold mines, atmospheric ruins like the Kitazawa Flotation Plant, and traditional culture that’s been preserved for centuries. The locals are warm and welcoming, and the fresh seafood is amazing. Whether you’re here for nature, history, or just to slow down, Sado Island will stay in your heart long after you leave.
Took a ferry here last year. Had a really nice time at the island. And that is a lot of seagulls yes.
Lovely island. Ferry is expensive if you take your own car.
Amazing island! Regular ferry running from Niigata, every 3 hours! First one departs at 6 am! Ride is approximately 2 hours long. Ferry fare is bit pricy, but worthwhile the experience! Incredible cycling destination with 270km of high quality roads circling the island, along the coastline !
