Who Yamaguchi is for
Travellers seeking refined, low-key culture off the tourist trail, plus garden and temple lovers.
Yamaguchi flourished under the Ouchi lords, who modelled it on Kyoto and welcomed the missionary Francis Xavier in 1550. Its emblem is the elegant five-storey pagoda of Rurikoji, one of the finest in Japan. The Zen garden of Joei-ji was laid out by the painter-monk Sesshu, and the nearby Yuda Onsen offers hot springs, while the great Akiyoshido limestone cave lies a short trip away.
