静岡
Shizuoka · chubu
A relaxed prefectural capital between the mountains and the sea, with Tokugawa-era sites, green-tea hills and Fuji views from the coast.
Who Shizuoka is for
Travellers wanting an unhurried, low-tourist city stop on the Tokyo to Kyoto corridor, plus tea and Fuji enthusiasts.
Shizuoka was the retirement home of Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose legacy survives at Sumpu Castle Park and the lavishly decorated Kunozan Toshogu shrine. The surrounding hills produce much of Japan's green tea, and the Miho no Matsubara pine grove on the bay frames Mount Fuji across the water. It rarely feels touristy despite sitting on the main shinkansen line.
