The projection mapping covers the north tower facade of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Tocho) in Shinjuku, bringing the characters and visual style of Bocchi the Rock! to one of the city's most recognisable public buildings. The work is part of the ongoing Tokyo Projection Mapping Project, which regularly commissions anime and art-themed works to screen on the building's exterior.
The series follows Hitori Gotoh, a socially anxious teenage guitarist who joins a band, and has built a dedicated fanbase in Japan and internationally since the anime adaptation aired in 2022. This projection mapping work, subtitled Seisun Complex, draws on that material for a large-scale outdoor display.
How to Get There
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a 5-minute walk from Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line (Exit A4), or about 10 minutes on foot from the west exit of Shinjuku Station on the JR lines, Tokyo Metro, and Odakyu and Keio lines. Admission to view the projection mapping is free.
Screening times and the full schedule are listed on the official project website - check before visiting, as individual works have specific nightly windows and may not screen every day.
Worth Knowing
Projection mapping events at Tocho attract anime fans as well as general passers-by, so expect a crowd on weekend evenings, particularly in the first few weeks of a new work. Weeknight viewings earlier in the run tend to be quieter. The surrounding Nishi-Shinjuku area has several convenience stores and a range of restaurants if you are planning to make an evening of it.
For visitors combining this with other Bocchi the Rock! locations in Tokyo, Shimokitazawa and Koenji are the neighbourhoods most associated with the series' setting, both reachable from Shinjuku in under 15 minutes by train.
